Jon Snow was raised the bastard son of Ned Stark in Winterfell. While being accepted by Robb, Arya and his brothers, it wasn't an easy life growing up in a home where the Lady of the house didn't exactly like you. Which is why he eventually chose to join the Night's Watch in the Northern-most part of Westeros at the Wall.
Even among the misfits, murderers and criminals, Jon didn't really find companionship or solace. It didn't take long after making his vows for him to wonder if it had been the right choice, especially after learning that his brother had marched South to try and get their sister back from King's Landing. But honor bound him to his vows and he stayed, took an undercover mission with the Wildlings from beyond the Wall, and ended up breaking his vows in a different way.
To no one's surprise, that didn't work out for him. She died, he was eventually raised to Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, despite several objections. Those objections turned mutinous one night, and Jon found himself at the pointy end of a lot of daggers before being left to bleed out in the snow.
He's back now, but no one really knows how death changes you.
